Chapter 1

The Archive at Dawn

📍 The Grand Archive, Lower Stacks

The archive smelled of old paper and dried lavender — a scent Lyra Ashveil had grown so accustomed to that she only noticed it on mornings like this, when the winter light came through the high windows at exactly the right angle to make the dust motes look like falling snow.

She had arrived an hour before her shift, as she always did. The other archivists called her obsessive. She preferred the word careful.

The lower stacks were cold enough that she could see her breath. Third sub-level, row forty-seven — the forgotten histories, the ones the Council had quietly stopped cataloguing sometime around the Year of the Silver Accord. Nobody came here except her.

Which was why, when she found the door, she knew immediately that something was wrong.

It was not a door she had ever seen before. It was not a door that should have been there at all.

The wood was dark and old — older than the archive itself, she suspected — and the handle was shaped like a flowering branch, the blossoms rendered in tarnished silver. There was no lock. There was no need for one. The door opened at her touch as though it had been waiting.

Inside, on a lectern of pale stone, sat a book that was glowing.

Not glowing the way enchanted objects sometimes did, with a faint residual warmth from a long-ago spell. Glowing the way a living thing glows. Steady. Patient. Aware.
